Bamboo Flooring 101

In the climate of South China, bamboo grows rapidly; one species can reach four feet in a single day!

For many buyers, the first consideration of new floor installation is cost. Bamboo flooring is comparable to most hardwoods, but offers advantageous qualities for discriminating consumers.

After cost, customers are interested in durability. Many choose ceramic for this purpose, although tile is perceived as cold and hard. Some opt for carpet, regardless of allergens and maintenance. Until recently, Westerners have had to turn to man-made materials to obtain a hardwood look with warmth, softness, and durability, but from the East comes an all natural alternative in the form of a grass called bamboo.

In the climate of South China, bamboo grows rapidly; one species can reach four feet in a single day! With a growth cycle of 6-8 years in a 10 year life span, bamboo can be harvested twice-a renewable resource! Bamboo resembles wood with its growth rings (called “knuckles”) patterning horizontally cut stalks used for planks. These planks are typically 36 or 72 inches long and almost 4 inches wide, while most hardwood planks are 40 inches long and almost 3 inches wide.

Bamboo flooring has been found to be harder than some oaks and beeches and more durable than most hardwoods. To achieve maximum durability, a strand woven style of bamboo flooring is available, but all versions are termed “dent resistant”. However, unlike wood flooring which can buckle or gap, bamboo is considered to have excellent stability, and can carry warranties up to 25 years.

Although people immediately think of bamboo as a “natural blonde”, there is a method of pressure steaming that can carbonize it to a caramel color. Some suppliers provide other finishes upon request, and with sanding and refinishing, color may even be changed. Therefore, bamboo flooring is as adaptable as hardwood to the many range of décors.

Although some varieties are sold unfinished, most planks are pre-finished on all 6 sides with UV resistant varnish. There is no need for sanding or chemical use; thus, installation time is reduced. Optimum results are realized if the supplier has purchased their products from a mill experienced in bamboo processing. Mature stalks of bamboo, properly dried, will result in the best floor, while professional production controls moisture content–a plus for customers in high humidity areas.

Like hardwood, water should not be left on bamboo, yet cleaning is as easy as sweeping and washing.

Bamboo shoots aren’t the only use of that amazing grass any longer!
