Caring for Bamboo Floors

That saying about beauty being in the eyes of the beholder may not apply to bamboo flooring.

That’s because 99.9% of the population like the looks of bamboo floors. So it’s unanimous. Everyone agrees that bamboo is synonymous to beauty. And man, having a weakness for physical beauty, will do whatever it takes to preserve that beauty.

So how does one preserve bamboo’s allure? You’ll be happy to know that bamboo isn’t a high maintenance floor. But just because it needs the minimum of care does not mean you can abandon it once it is installed and forget about your “floor duty.” Neglect in care and maintenance may have consequences over time.

One piece of friendly advice: if your budget allows it, go for high grade bamboo. A thing of beauty is a joy forever, but a thing of quality lasts a lifetime.

To maintain your bamboo floor, you need to keep it free from dust. A good sweep or regular vacuuming would be a welcome gesture. Use a slightly damp mop. Note that we said “slightly damp.” You don’t want to apply a wet cloth over your floors as excessive water can cause your floors to cup or swell.

For a refinishing touch, use a de-glosser then coat it with a fresh urethane finish. No doubt your manufacturer will provide you with care and maintenance guidelines, but if you forget these guidelines, bear in mind that basic cleaning is all you need. Just ensure that your bamboo floor is clean at all times and free of grime, wax, or paint.

It would be helpful if you add some kind of moisture barrier. Given this flooring material’s resistance to moisture, applying an additional safeguard will guarantee long term improved floor performance. You can inspect your bamboo floors periodically for any defects or irregularities. The sooner you fix the problems, the better it is for bamboo’s long life.

Scatter some walk mats or rugs on high traffic areas of your floor, and keep these rugs clean. Don’t forget to use anti-glide pads on the legs of your furniture so re-locating them will not scratch or scar your bamboo floors. To restore its original luster, you may use an electric floor buffer.

And ladies, watch those spiked heels…please.
