Bamboo Floor Finishes
Carbonized bamboo
is the preferred choice for flooring, but many
people prefer the look of natural bamboo.
For green,
eco-friendly homes, bamboo flooring is all the
rage. Typically softer than most hardwood
floors, special care must be taken to ensure the
long life of the wood. Carbonized bamboo is the
preferred choice for flooring, but many people
prefer the look of natural bamboo.
The carbonization process hardens the natural
bamboo making it more resistance to marring and
scuffs. The process also changes the color of
the natural bamboo and because of this requires
little or no staining as a finish, although
there are additional colors available, such as
spice, to co-ordinate with the homeowners décor.
Natural bamboo floors are very soft, making it
almost unusable for high traffic areas. A simple
walk across the floor in high heels will leave
an indentation with each step. Natural bamboo
should be used only in those areas where shoes,
pets and children are not allowed.
Most topcoat finishes for bamboo are water-based
polyurethane. Because the finish is water based,
it creates a non-toxic protection for the wood.
This is a major selling point for those looking
for an environmentally safe home for their
families.
Over time, all bamboo floors will need
refinishing. This should be done by a
professional floor refinisher that has
experience in working with bamboo. For the
do-it-yourself type, materials and tools needed
include a sander, a soft-brush vacuum, wood
stains and water-based polyurethane or acrylic.
It is important when buying bamboo flooring to
read and understand the manufacturer's warranty
on the wood and the finish. It is also crucial
to have the floor installed by professionals to
prevent damage to the bamboo boards during
installation.
Bamboo floors can be and are a beautiful
addition to any home, provided care is taken
after the floor is installed. Many manufacturers
recommend stocking feet only and booties for
your pets.
