Making Minor Repairs To Bamboo Flooring
As tough as
bamboo floors are, they’re not completely
indestructible. The same things that can damage
a hardwood or laminated floor can also damage a
bamboo floor.
To keep your
bamboo floor looking good as new, you do need to
take some care and precautions with it. Below
are some tips on caring for and repairing your
bamboo floors to keep them looking fabulous.
1. Choose a quality product.
Bamboo flooring varies widely in quality. While
bamboo can be harvested as young as three years,
older plants are hardier and tougher. Start with
a bamboo floor from a trusted supplier who
certifies that the bamboo used in the flooring
material is at least five years old.
2. Follow installation instructions to the
letter.
Many problems with bamboo flooring and other
wood floors arise from improper installation. Be
certain that all manufacturer’s installation
instructions are followed to prevent uneven wear
and unsightly bowing and bending.
3. Keep the floors clean.
Dirt, especially gritty dirt, is the number
one cause of damage to bamboo floors. You can
minimize the chance of damage by sweeping or dry
mopping daily to pick up any loose dirt that may
scratch the finish of the wood. Damp mop weekly,
and clean up spills promptly.
4. Protect your floor from scratches and
dents.
Use protective pads under furniture legs, and
avoid dragging heavy items over your bamboo
floors. In addition, avoid walking on the floor
in high heel shoes with stiletto heels which can
damage or gouge the wood.
If your floors do get damaged – and minor damage
is almost inevitable – you can use the same
repair methods that you’d use to repair a
hardwood floor. Minor scratches are the most
common damage that your bamboo floors might see.
There are several methods of repairing minor
scratches:
- Lightly
buff the area with fine sandpaper, being
sure to sand in the direction of the wood
grade.
- A wood
repair wax stick in the same color as the
bamboo floor can camouflage and fill minor
scratches.
- You may be
able to raise a small dent with water. Just
drop a few drops of water on the damaged
area and allow it to dry. A hair dryer can
help speed up the process.
If the damage is
too severe, it may require replacing the damaged
plank or piece.
